[CONCEPT OF NEED & MOTIVATION: TYPES & TECHNIQUES]

  • There are many needs which an individual may have.
  • Due to various needs (motives) people are continuously in a motivational state. 
  • When one need is satisfied, another takes place. 
  • Needs may be grouped into three categories: a. Primary Needs, b. Secondary Needs, c. General Needs
A. Primary Needs:
  • Physiological/ biological/ basic needs
  • Essential for survival
  • Common to all human beings, intensity may differ
  • Need for food, sleep, air to breathe etc.
B. Secondary Needs:
  • Not natural but learned through experience, interaction, observation
  • Also called learned or derived needs
  • Need for power, achievement, status, recognition etc.
C. General Needs:
  • Lie between the primary and secondary needs
  • Need for affection, respect etc.  

MOTIVATION: Types & Techniques 
1. Positive Motivation
Positive motivators generally  have an optimistic attitude behind and they are generally given to satisfy the psychological requirements of employees. For example-promotion, praise, recognition, perks and allowances, etc. 

2. Negative Motivation
Negative motivators are those whose purpose is to correct the mistakes or defaults of employees. Negative incentive is generally resorted to when positive incentive does not works and a psychological set back has to be given to employees. For example- demotion, transfer, fines, penalties.

3. Monetary Motivation
Salaries, Fringe benefits (staff discounts, contributions to travel costs, staff uniforms etc), Time-rate pay (pay based on time worked), Piece-rate pay (pay per item produced), Commissions, Performance-related pay, Bonuses for achieving targets, Pensions, Additional paid vacation time, Profit sharing.

4. Non-Monetary Motivation
Flexible work hours, Training & Professional Development, Status, Pleasant work environment, Recognition (praise in verbal, written or ideally a public announcement), Involvement in key decisions, Independence and Autonomy, Gifts & Awards, Personal Thank-You Notes, Job enrichment, Promotion Opportunities.

Definitions of MOTIVATION
“Motivation is the act or process of providing with something (as a need or desire) that causes a person to act.”
“Motivation is a fire from within. If someone else tries to light that fire under you, chances are it will burn very briefly.”

Extrinsic Vs. Intrinsic Motivation

Different types of motivation are frequently described as being either extrinsic or intrinsic:

Extrinsic Motivations are those that arise from outside of the individual and often involve rewards such as trophies, reward, good grades,  money, social recognition or praise.  

Intrinsic Motivations are those that arise from within the individual. They are driven by Internal desires to perform a particular task. They do certain activities because it gives them pleasure, develops a particular skill or it’s morally the right thing to do. Such as doing a complicated cross-word puzzle purely for the personal gratification of solving a problem.
 
Importance of MOTIVATION

A. Puts human resources into action
  • Best possible utilization of resources
  • Willingness to work
B. Improves level of efficiency of employees
  • Increase in productivity
  • Reducing cost of operations
C. Leads to achievement of organizational goals
  • Co-operative work environment
  • Goal-directed employee performance
D. Builds friendly relationship
  • Monetary & non-monetary incentives with Promotion opportunities
  • Reduced Industrial disputes and less unrest in employees
E. Leads to stability of work force
  • Employees loyalty to the enterprise
  • Good public image of the concern in the market
Motivation is important to an individual.
  • Motivation helps him to achieve personal goals.
  • If an individual is motivated, he has job satisfaction.
  • Motivation helps in self-development of the individual.
  • An individual always gains by working with a dynamic team.
Similarly, motivation is also important to a business.
  • The more motivated the employees are, the more productive the team is.
  • The more is the team work and individual employee contribution, more profitable and successful is the business.
  • Motivation will lead to an optimistic and challenging attitude at work place.
  • During period of amendments, there will be more adaptability and creativity.

1. Motivation is the word derived from the word ‘motive’ which means needs, desires, wants or drives within the individuals.

2. Motivation is one of the most important keys to success.

3. Motivation is defined as the process that initiates, guides and maintains goal-oriented behaviors.

4. Motivation is what causes us to act.

5. It is the process of stimulating people to actions to accomplish the goals.

6. Motivation is the inner power or energy that pushes toward acting, performing actions and achieving.

7. Motivation has much to do with desire and ambition, and if they are absent, motivation is absent too.

8. Often, a person has the desire and ambition to get something done or achieve a certain goal, but lacks the push, the initiative and the willingness to take action. This is due to lack of motivation.

9. When there is lack of motivation you either get no results, or only mediocre results, whereas when there is motivation you attain greater and better results and achievements.

10. To raise and develop the desire to work is the concept of motivation.

[Low Self Esteem & Ways to Improve]

“Low self-esteem can result from various factors, including a physical appearance or weight, socioeconomic status, or peer pressure or bullying.”
 
Symptoms of Low Self Esteem
  • Depression
  • Underachievement
  • Negative Attitude
  • Nervousness

Characteristics/ Effects of Low Self Esteem

(i) They find it difficult to make decisions. 
(ii) They are not satisfied with themselves, they think they don’t do anything well. 
(iii) They don’t like to compete with others.
(iv) They don’t believe in themselves.
(v)  They see themselves failing before they begin.  
(vi) They believe they can never be as good as they should be or as others. 
(vii) They are afraid to show their creativity.  
(viii) They are dissatisfied with their lives.
(ix) They spend most of their time alone.
(x) They complain and criticize.
(xi) They worry about everything and do nothing.

Ways to Improve Self-Esteem
  • Forgive yourself for past mistakes. 
  • Focus on your positive attributes.
  • Follow the example of successful people.
  • Become a self talker. 
  • Exhibit a Positive Attitude.
  • Appreciate you small achievements even. 
  • Believe in Yourself ! 
  • Become physically fit.
  • Learn new things.
  • Improve your personal relationships.
  • Dress well!  
CONCLUSION
Self esteem is very important factor. Without self esteem nothing seems positive in life. High self-esteem gives you a GOOD feeling about yourself. Low self-esteem distorts your view of yourself. Be confident in yourself and your abilities. Value yourself, your ability and your contribution in the world because you are unique. You cannot value and respect others unless you first value and respect yourself. Finally, one last reason why your self esteem is so important. It will help you be a happier person. Remember, You are a unique individual. No one else is like you in this whole world. This makes you feel special already! Our time in this world is limited. Make it work for you so you leave your mark in history!
