Definitions of MOTIVATION
“Motivation is the act or process of providing with something (as a need or desire) that causes a person to act.”
“Motivation is a fire from within. If someone else tries to light that fire under you, chances are it will burn very briefly.”

Extrinsic Vs. Intrinsic Motivation

Different types of motivation are frequently described as being either extrinsic or intrinsic:

Extrinsic Motivations are those that arise from outside of the individual and often involve rewards such as trophies, reward, good grades,  money, social recognition or praise.  

Intrinsic Motivations are those that arise from within the individual. They are driven by Internal desires to perform a particular task. They do certain activities because it gives them pleasure, develops a particular skill or it’s morally the right thing to do. Such as doing a complicated cross-word puzzle purely for the personal gratification of solving a problem.
 
Importance of MOTIVATION

  • Willingness to work
B. Improves level of efficiency of employees
  • Increase in productivity
  • Reducing cost of operations
C. Leads to achievement of organizational goals
  • Co-operative work environment
  • Goal-directed employee performance
D. Builds friendly relationship
  • Monetary & non-monetary incentives with Promotion opportunities
  • Reduced Industrial disputes and less unrest in employees
E. Leads to stability of work force
  • Employees loyalty to the enterprise
  • Good public image of the concern in the market
Motivation is important to an individual.
  • Motivation helps him to achieve personal goals.
  • If an individual is motivated, he has job satisfaction.
  • Motivation helps in self-development of the individual.
  • An individual always gains by working with a dynamic team.
Similarly, motivation is also important to a business.
  • The more motivated the employees are, the more productive the team is.
  • The more is the team work and individual employee contribution, more profitable and successful is the business.
  • Motivation will lead to an optimistic and challenging attitude at work place.
  • During period of amendments, there will be more adaptability and creativity.
